Sociology is the discipline that defines and describes members of a community or collective groups of people. In addition to following the rules of law, most people follow societal rules because we observe and follow the herd. Psychology, on the other hand, focuses more on individuals and why they make choices. It is the study of human behavior and the mental processes that drive how we think, act, and feel. 

A lot of lessons have been learned from dealing with the COVID crisis, both on the local and global levels. One question on everyone’s mind is how will the next global situation be handled? From an ethical standpoint, it’s a reasonable concern.

It is very easy to be intimidated by the subject of Philosophy. The world of academia is already a very exclusionary club, and Philosophy as a subject tends to attract the elitist of the elite. That being said, if someone wants to explore this fascinating subject on their own, either as a career or just as a passing interest, there are plenty of generous authors waiting with welcome arms to ease them into the process.

When people talk about the dawn of Western civilization, they describe the development of a society that traveled westward from Ancient Greece, bringing with it a blend of European cultural ideas and philosophies. Philosophy emerged around this time, as early as the 5th century BC. Philosophy is a Greek word meaning love of wisdom. Over time, philosophical questions became so diverse that different schools needed to be formed to satisfy everyone seeking answers. These became the separate schools of philosophy.

The basis of Philosophy is to question everything. The word literally means a love of wisdom. People who study this subject do so because they are instinctively fascinated with knowledge about the universe, themselves, and their role in their connection to the universe. The discipline of Philosophy welcomes all questions, no matter how abstract or generalized. Questions about our very existence carry as much weight as questions about morality and why some of us reason differently and learn languages at different speeds. Everything is connected. Questions are presented in an open-ended format to encourage thoughtful, meaningful debate instead of yes or no responses. 

When people think of philosophers, the ancient wise scholars of Plato and Aristotle may come to mind. It’s very unusual for someone to think about a modern-day person studying this field, much less being a major influencer. However, there are still people out there who enjoy studying the fundamental nature of reality, knowledge, and existence at an academic level. Just like there are more inventions to be invented, there are always going to be fresh viewpoints and ideas waiting to be shared. 

Philosophy is described as a way of thinking about the world we live in, the universe around us, and society in general. It takes on the format of asking very abstract, thought-invoking questions about the nature of topics like how humans think, how the universe connects us, and how society plays a part in all of it.
